When fiscal year 2009 began, there was every reason for concern about the research enterprise at The University of Iowa. The Iowa River, which bisects the campus, remained above flood stage in the wake of the state of Iowa’s largest natural disaster in history. Several major research programs were disrupted, and the Power Plant that serves our 1,700-acre campus was off-line. Despite this inauspicious beginning, University of Iowa faculty and staff generated impressive growth in extramural support in FY 2009. Total external funding achieved yet another all-time record of $429.5 million. This represents an impressive 10.3 percent increase over 2008 and continues a trend that has seen consistent increases over the past 23 years.
